Sharing Technology and Expertise to Fight Forest Fires

Every summer the risk of forest fires threatens Southern Europe. Thousands of hectares of forest go up in flames destroying not only the environment, but also threatening lives and people's livelihoods.

Several EU member states and the European Commission are now working closely together to change that. EU FIRE 5 they say is the answer. It’s still only a pilot project, but it's showing how the combined resources of member states can be used to respond to emergencies. And as Barbara Gruber reports, it's also laying the foundations of a future European rapid intervention force for disasters – on the continent and abroad.
